| Children from HIV positive families attend vocational training on income generating activities. |
Although HIV/AIDS seems to be mainly a health problem, it has a much greater impact on people with AIDS and those closest to them. The challenges they face include:
- Discrimination and negative mental image of their entire family
- Adequate education for children
- Getting and keeping a job.
In 2005, the percentage of HIV- infected persons in Thailand was estimated to be the highest in the world! Of more than 1 million people, 50,000+ were children who contracted the disease at birth, or from family members. Local health facilities and the government lack policies and funds to assist AIDS patients and HIV positive affected people.
PEARL S BUCK FOUNDATION IN THAILAND (PSBFT) recognized these problems and established programs in several Thailand provinces, especially for racial-ethnic minorities. Working in four relevant facets – Health, Education, Livelihood and Psychosocial Protection– the HELP program brings hope and opens new opportunities for families who have suffered
and persevered through the pains of the dreadful diagnosis of HIV/AIDS.
