| Colombians can celebrate their culture when they have the confidence to work toward a more secure future. |
The 40-year armed conflict in Colombia is rooted in a history of extreme inequality and political exclusion and has intensified due to drug trafficking. According to the UN, Colombia leads the world in the number of people displaced by armed conflicts and also victims of anti-personnel mines. More than 6,000 politically-motivated murders and 2,000+ kidnappings occur annually.
CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES’ Escuela de Paz y Convivencia (School for Peace and Co-Existence) has shown excellent results in teaching citizens to transform conflicts in a constructive manner. This rotating school is held during a one-year period in a specific area that has suffered from conflict, and then rotates to a new zone. In each location, a core group including community leaders such as clergy, laypersons and teachers, is trained in concepts and techniques of peace-building, human rights, gender, advocacy, theology-spirituality, and its relation to democracy. The core group then teaches at the community level to create a culture of peace.
From a single training core group, 218 men and 244 women leaders have held 10 schools involving 924 more people in training and community peace-building activities. Such training will impact the future of Colombia.
