| Wheelchairs can be assembled by volunteers or provide employment for local people. |
Since the year 2000, 3,850 wheelchairs have been distributed in Ecuador, but more than 1.4 million individuals in Ecuador live in poverty and struggle with a disability. The stress on individuals with disabilities and their caregivers is overwhelming. Without a wheelchair, the disabled must crawl, wait to be carried, or spend their days in loneliness and darkness, living each day in humiliation and danger. However, lives can be changed with a simple, inexpensive wheelchair. Not only does an individual reclaim his/ her dignity, but caretakers are freed to work again, generating income and support for the family.
FREE WHEELCHAIR MISSION (FWM) seeks to bring the transforming gift of mobility to many developing countries. After researching and designing a wheelchair to meet the needs of the physically disabled poor around the world, FWM now sends a simple, rugged and inexpensive wheelchair delivered in a kit. Local workers assemble the wheelchair.
