One well provides clean water for
3,000 Sudanese people each day. |
Clean water is the foundation for stable, healthier communities. Millions of African people cannot settle in one place because they must continually seek water for their livestock and their own survival. When water wells are drilled and pumping equipment is installed in strategically defined locations, the need for annual migrations of nomadic peoples can be eliminated. According to the United Nations, an average of 3,000 people can obtain potable water daily from a single well.
In places where WATER FOR SUDAN (WFS) has built relationships with the local village people and drilled a well, the leaders of successfully managed well-sites hire two people from the village to oversee on-site distribution throughout the 24-hour day.
WFS is prepared to drill at least 110 wells by the end of 2009, providing 651,000 people with clean water daily. To drill one well and install pumping equipment costs $8800.
