“Kenya’s street children
are in great jeopardy.” |
Since post-election violence following the 2007 elections, more than 250,000 Kenyans have become refugees or orphans. Some are alone as a result of their parents dying of AIDS. Families, who were once self-supporting, suddenly are without any resources of their own and must turn to charitable organizations for survival. They suffer from shame, as well as being homeless and hungry.
EXPANDING OPPORTUNITIES (EO) has a home, feeding programs and a school for Kenyan children. Some days, a lunch packed by EO allows the children to remain in school, since their families can’t afford both tuition and food. In payment, relatives or the children are happy to wash dishes, work in the garden or pick up trash as ‘payment’ for the lunch. EO’s shelter facility is filled to capacity with children who would otherwise be on the streets. EO also plans to build a much-needed home for girls.
