| A nurse assistant trained by MAP provides health care and hope for Ugandans in a refugee camp. |
Over a 20-year period, nearly 1.5 million people have fled the violence of civil war between the Ugandan government and the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) rebels. Refugee camps provide relative safety, but conditions are deplorable, lacking clean water, sanitation and basic health services.
During the years of conflict, most trained medical personnel left the country, causing a huge human resource gap. Working with the Government and Anglican Church of Uganda, MEDICAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS INTERNATIONAL (MAP) trains health workers and provides medicines and health and sanitation kits. By training 100 workers, one camp housing 10,000 people can receive basic health services. Training for one worker includes 3-day sessions for three weeks and basic knowledge of simple disease diagnosis and treatment and disease prevention strategies.
Trained health care workers are equipped with a medical kit containing medicine and supplies to last about four months. This project ensures the kits are restocked and available for continued community health services.
