Since 1994, an entire generation of Iraqi families has suffered as a result of the wars and embargos. Although billions of dollars have been spent in military efforts to help the country break free from years of tyranny, a less desirable consequence of war is that humanitarian aid cannot reach the people most in need. Poverty and hunger become the greatest challenges for all families, but it affects women and children the most.
In Baghdad, CATHOLIC CHARITIES USA (CC-USA), working with Caritas Iraq provides emergency food aid to prevent this continuous hardship. Field workers distribute food items to ensure basic nutritional needs for each receiving family. Through their efforts, at least 120 families with an average of six members can receive food aid each month. A typical supply includes 15 Kg of rice, 15 Kg of flour, 7.5 Kg of sugar, 8 liters cooking oil, 4 Kg legumes, and 15 cans each of luncheon meat, tomato paste, tuna and cheese. Since the embargo in 1994, the CC-USA and Caritas Iraq Emergency Food Program has helped feed more than 6,100 people.
