21 Saving Lives of Mothers & Infants
Guatemala

Because many Guatemalan teenaged girls leave their education behind to begin families, their lack of understanding about reproductive health often leads to premature births and severe complications for both mother and child. This is most problematic for the Mayan women whose mortality rate is twice the Guatemalan national average. In these communities up to 85% of births take place at home with no qualified medical staff present.

The PROJECT CONCERN INTERNATIONAL (PCI) Casa Materna (Mother’s House) in Huehuetenango, serves as a cultural bridge. Since the year 2000, more than 40,000 women have received culturally-sensitive birth-related care. The staff provides women with medical evaluations, delivery services, medicine and support during and between pregnancies, to ensure healthy births. Each year, as many as 12,000 mothers and infants also receive shelter for up to one week along with the staff’s care and attention to their emotional and physical needs. The facility is run by community health workers in coordination with the Guatemalan Ministry of Health. Since it first began offering services, complications and maternal deaths due to childbirth have been significantly reduced.
