This man’s smile says “thank you
for caring about me.”
Many of China’s elderly are abandoned by their families at a time when they need the greatest amount of care. Although China has traditionally been a society built upon values of family-centered relationships, many elderly now face abandonment due to new reforms and the attraction of personal wealth and success for their adult children. Young adults, loyal to their employers, have separated from traditional family obligations, especially that of caring for elderly parents. Although China has recently offered a social security system, many elderly do not qualify for support. The poorest of the poor had insufficient income to pay into this system and these elderly adults will continue to struggle to exist.
CHINA CONNECTION & AMITY FOUNDATION, in cooperation with Chinese Christian Churches, recognizes the situation of the elderly poor. At least 85 Homes for the abandoned elderly have been established where basic needs are provided: shelter, food, clean clothes, medicine and health care. These centers are staffed by volunteers who highlight the importance of human dignity, especially through the life-giving daily interactions between the elderly and their caregivers.
