Indigenous peoples living in North Nicaragua and Panama have fought hard for their legal autonomy from the government. Sustainable agriculture education provides many solutions to eliminate problems the people face. Teaching organic gardening and life skills, while making seed supplies available to women is a key to bolster food security in each area. MADRE, an international women’s human rights NGO, works with local women and educational research teams to create sustainable development and conservation projects which protect the land and preserve unique cultures in each area. They advocate and facilitate education and crosscultural communication. In Nicaragua, the Harvesting Hope project assists women in 104 Miskito communities fight poverty, malnutrition, 90% unemployment, and lack of electricity and clean water. In Panama, training sessions for Kuna women leaders teach about the environment, community organizing, advocacy, reproductive health, women’s educational opportunities and rights, family violence and conflict resolution.
