4 Building Greenhouses to Heal TB Patients
North Korea

The people of North Korea have suffered many hardships over the years. Tuberculosis continues to be a major health threat which is exacerbated by the long, harsh winters. CFK has provided significant distribution of food and TB medicine since 1995, but overwhelming needs still exist for the most basic things, particularly at rural health facilities.

CHRISTIAN FRIENDS OF KOREA (CFK) works with the tuberculosis treatment unit at two hospitals, at least 15 care homes, and at a Kaesong children’s hospital, providing medicine, food, doctors’ kits, blankets, and other essentials. Fresh vegetables and greens are also vital for the rehabilitation of hospital patients, but more greenhouses, both large and small, are needed to provide the nutritious foods that will aid in the recovery of even more patients. CFK uses specialized greenhouses to lengthen the growing season for these fresh foods. Large greenhouses based at the hospitals cost $8,000 each and CFK hopes to send smaller units home with now-healthy patients. Annually, at least 12,000 TB patients and 30,000 children receive treatment each year at CFK supported facilities; 70-85% recover and return to normal lives.
