40 Transforming Lives with Micro-Loans
Nigeria

Without start-up capital, Nigeria’s poor struggle to
create financial independence. Most live on less
than $1 a day
.

Jobs are scarce in Nigeria, but with a small amount of capital, an entrepreneur can start a business that can provide income for their family and help break the cycle of poverty. PEER SERVANTS works with local partners in the poor regions of Nigeria to provide micro-loans for resilient, hard-working people. One chicken farmer used the proceeds from her business to build and run a school for 150 children who otherwise would not be receiving a quality education. Another successful loan recipient, a tailor, now employs 10 people and teaches others through an apprenticeship program so that they can learn a trade while supporting their families.

Micro-loans used to start and expand small businesses are widely recognized as successful strategies in fighting poverty and creating opportunities. Since 1998, Peer Servants has provided over 2100 business loans to individuals and groups in Nigeria.
